The largest part of what makes a pillow great is your personal preference and no matter what anyone says, if a pillow is not right for you then you will struggle to obtain a relaxing and rejuvenating night’s sleep.
Depending on the position you spend the bulk of the night sleeping in, you will have different requirements. For that reason we offer our advice on pillows as a general guideline for the majority of people.
What are these sleeping positions we keep talking about?
- Back Sleepers require thinner pillows so their head is not always in an uncomfortable position
- Side sleepers should choose a firm, high pillow to bridge the negative space between their ear and shoulder
- Stomach sleepers need a flat pillow; high pillows can cause headaches and reduce essential REM time
The goal you should aim for is to keep your head and spine in a neutral alignment. Medical professionals all recommend that your head must be squarely aligned to your shoulders without bending too far forwards or backwards.
We find that the mix of down and feathers provides a great malleable pillow which can be used in a wide variety of sleep positions. Memory foam pillows provide great support for back and side sleepers (although if you overheat easily try the feather and down mix).
